How Can I Find a Practitioner?

OB handout for doulas

Here is a (small, but growing) list of Certified Friends of Breech Babies. Check out one of these women for local, personal help.

While I am working on developing a list of practitioners, you can use these tips to help track down some of your own. You can also contact me in case I know of someone in your area that I haven’t put up yet. If you find someone who works with Breech Mamas, please let me know.

Here are some things to talk about with a practitioner you are considering. You can use these for acupuncturists, doctors, midwives, hypnotherapists, etc.

Questions to ask:

What is your experience with breech presentation?
What is your confidence level?
What is your opinion on the safety of ______?
Do you feel you can speak without bias about breech birth? Why or why not?

Never underestimate the power of a connection. CALL OR EMAIL people in birth community, they all know each other and will help you out. Ask your childbirth educator or doula or anyone you know involved in birth and babies if they know someone who does what you are looking for.

If you want a vaginal birth but no one will attend you:

Option one: Resign yourself to a cesarean and be at peace about it
Option two: Risk an unassisted home birth
Option three: Find and travel to someone who will attend you
Option four: Convince someone to attend you

Michael Odent, famous French mother-baby friendly obstetrician, says, “Breech birth by people who are scared of breech birth is very dangerous” and advises that it is better for you to have a cesarean than risk a vaginal delivery with someone who is nervous and really doesn’t know what they are doing.

Most US hospital obstetricians who are willing to attend a vaginal breech birth  (especially under option 4, coercion) may only be able to give you a breech delivery or extraction (hands on, forceps, episiotomy, lithotomy position, drugs, etc).

If you find a confident, experienced practitioner who  is part of a practice, make sure you  ask them to be on call for you for this baby. WHO is down there matters much more in a breech birth than otherwise.
