Hot/Cold/Talk

Talk to Turn a Breech

The Deal:

You baby loves to hear your voice. And it’s just possible that asking her to turn will work. It’s like therapy for your baby. You are having couples therapy with your baby. And you’re also the therapist. Alternately, a good psychotherapist or counselor could help you with talking to your baby.

How To:
Tell your baby how you are feeling and ask about how she is doing. Ask if there is something she needs before she can turn head-down. Are you more comfy that way, baby? Tell her about your worries. Ask if she is afraid of anything. Comfort her. A little belly massage feels right here. You might realize something about yourself or relax enough to feel your baby better.

Why it might work:
There are benefits for both of you here, no matter how, shall we say, “liberal” your scientific sensibilities are. There is a whole book, probably many of them, written about the value of talking to your baby in utero to develop closeness. These authors assure you that you can start parenting and develop a relationship with your baby now. In any case, there is hard science about the fact that your baby does hear and prefer your voice.Your baby is also exposed to whatever chemicals and hormones you have coursing through you. If you sound upset and your body is running upset chemicals and hormones, your baby hears and feels it. So, as therapy for both of you, talk to your baby.

Cold/Hot: Frozen Peas to Turn Breech

The Deal:
This is the one everyone talks about. It’s so easy. People have reported success with it, and you can do it while you watch tv.
How To:
I felt a little bad about this the first few times we did it, but as the c-section date approached I became ruthless with the old bag of frozen peas. Put cold stuff by your baby’s head (on top of your belly or wherever it is) and warm stuff by your pelvis, at the very bottom of your belly.
Why it might work:
Freeze her out! Babies are like us. They like nice warmies things and may just move with your frozen prodding.
