Oxytocin Handout for Birth

February 20, 2019 By Lauren McClain

Use this oxytocin handout at prenatal appointments and in birth classes as a powerful way to help couples understand the importance of environment, relaxation, and love for labor.

Here’s a handy, easy to read graphic on the science and uses of the hormone oxytocin. When you understand how your body works, you can work with your body!

Oxytocin is the hormone that contracts the uterus. No oxytocin, no contraction; no contraction, no labor. More oxytocin=faster and easier birth.

Birthing in rhythm with oxytocin is also more comfortable because you work with your body and get a lot more endorphins and other feel-good aspects of normal, physiological birth.

Many of my clients have left unfriendly OB practices to work with midwives, birth centers, or OBs with a good reputation after getting this handout.

Finding and then further creating a safe, oxytocin-friendly environment is a paramount to safe, physiological birth. Print it, copy it, laminate it, make it a poster!
