Cascade of Interventions Handout

February 20, 2019 By Lauren McClain

risks of epidural flow chart

Get this cascade of interventions chart for your classes and clients. Use as a handout when discussing epidural risks and how labor with an epidural is different.

The who, what, when, where, why and how of epidural for birth can be found on my Awesome Epidural Fact Sheet. This graphic is a display of complications and further interventions that can take place with an epidural.

With an epidural, you’re going to have an IV, stationary position, electronic fetal monitor, and a bladder catheter. You’re also likely to have weaker contractions and more difficulty pushing. Each of these changes that occur with an epidural have complications related to them.

Sometimes called a waterfall effect, this cascade of intervention often leads to a cesarean, postpartum complications, or a labor that includes more risk and invasive procedures.

Demonstrate the effects of epidural with this chart and use it as a jumping point to talk about the similar cascade of intervention that begins with induction. More about induction and methods of induction with my Help Baby Out handout.
